How Implant-Retained Dentures Can Restore Your Smile and Confidence

Written by Torrey Hills Dental

Implant Retained Dentures

When you lose all of your natural teeth, it can be challenging to smile confidently. You may feel like you are not attractive anymore or have lost a part of yourself. Thankfully, implant-retained dentures can restore your smile and confidence! Drs. James and Brian Tasto of Torrey Hills Dental in San Diego, California work routinely with patients interested in learning the benefits of placing dentures along with implants in the dental arch and take the time to evaluate patients who are ready to find out if they are appropriate candidates.

What are implant-supported partials and dentures?

Implant-retained dentures use dental implants to hold the denture in place, which gives you a secure and comfortable fit. Not only will your smile look better, but you will also be able to eat and speak properly again. These restorations stay firmly in the smile, eliminating the risk of dentures slipping or coming out at inopportune social moments! Dental implants are widely used in replacing one or more teeth as they are small titanium posts that help patients maintain their natural bone and eliminate the risk of natural bone resorption that commonly occurs in long-term denture wearers.

How do implant-retained dentures work?

Implant-retained dentures work by using a few dental implants in the lower or upper jaw to hold a partial denture in place. If you are missing all of your teeth, we will use four to six implants in the upper and/or lower jaws to secure a full denture. The implant is placed into the jawbone during a surgical procedure and allowed time to heal (usually around three months). Once healed, the abutment is attached to the implant, and the denture is fitted over it. Unlike traditional removable dentures that rely on suction or adhesive to stay in place, implant-retained dentures are very stable and will not move around like their traditional counterparts.

What are the primary advantages of implant-supported dentures?

There are several benefits to implant-supported dentures, including:

  • Improved smile appearance and function
  • No slipping or moving of dentures
  • Stable fit that will not move around like traditional removable dentures
  • Preservation of natural bone due to the use of dental implants
  • Reduced likelihood of oral health problems such as gum disease and tooth decay
