Emergency Dental Treatments

Dental emergencies can happen at any time, and they often require immediate attention to alleviate pain and prevent further damage. At Torrey Hills Dental in Carmel Valley, we understand the importance of prompt and effective emergency dental care. Our team of experienced dentists and staff are equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, oftentimes on the same day.

Toothaches

Painful toothaches can be caused by a variety of factors, including cavities, gum disease, tooth fractures, abscesses, or even food caught between your tooth and gums. If you experience a toothache, it is important to schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist as soon as possible to prevent the situation from getting any worse.

In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with warm water and use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage the discomfort. You can also floss around the tooth to remove any food or debris that may be caught. Avoid DIY treatments such as placing aspirin directly on the affected tooth or gums, as this can cause tissue damage.

Abscessed Teeth

An abscessed tooth is a serious condition that requires prompt attention. It’s caused by a bacterial infection in the tooth’s pulp, which can lead to swelling, pain, and even life-threatening situations if it goes untreated. If you suspect you have an abscessed tooth, contact our emergency dental clinic right away. Treatment typically involves draining the abscess and prescribing antibiotics to eliminate the swelling, and then treating the tooth with a root canal.

Broken, Chipped, or Knocked-Out Teeth

Cracking or knocking out a tooth can be a traumatic experience. If you have a broken or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If a tooth has been knocked out, it is important to handle it carefully and avoid touching the roots. Rinse the tooth with water and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store the tooth or the remaining tooth fragment in a container of milk and bring it with you to our emergency dentists in San Diego. We’ll quickly assess the damage, help get you out of pain, and recommend the appropriate treatment, which may include bonding, a crown, or something similar.

Bleeding or Swollen Gums

Bleeding or swollen gums can be a sign of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss and other complications. Swelling can also be caused by food lodged under your gums against your tooth root or an abscess that’s starting to form.

If you notice bleeding or swelling in your gums and you’re in pain, schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with salt water and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.

Cut Gums or Oral Lacerations

Injuries to your mouth can be alarming because of how easily they bleed. If you cut your mouth on something, rinse with warm water and apply pressure to the affected area with a clean cloth until the bleeding subsides. If the bleeding persists, contact our emergency dental clinic for further instructions. However, if the bleeding is severe or you suspect any broken bones, head to the nearest emergency room.

Broken Dental Work (Crowns, Fillings, etc.)

Dental work such as crowns or fillings can break or come loose over time. Especially if there is recurring tooth decay or you’re chewing something extremely sticky. If you have a broken or loose crown or filling, contact our emergency dental clinic right away. In the meantime, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, as your tooth will be susceptible to further breakage until it’s repaired.

Denture Emergencies

Dentures are a popular solution for missing teeth, but they can also cause problems if you accidentally drop and break them. If you have a broken or ill-fitting denture that hurts to wear, contact our Carmel Valley dental clinic as soon as possible. Our team can repair, adjust, or replace your denture to ensure it fits properly.
